Have Chinese Panda coins you’re thinking about selling? Oakton Coins & Collectibles buys gold and silver Panda coins at our shop in nearby Skokie. Bring in a single coin, a group of bullion coins, or an inherited collection for an in-person evaluation.
Chinese Pandas can appeal to both precious-metal buyers and coin collectors. We examine the individual coins to determine whether their value comes primarily from their gold or silver content or whether they deserve consideration as collectible coins.
What Are Chinese Panda Coins?
Chinese Panda coins feature a giant panda design and come in different dates, sizes, and precious metals. Gold and silver versions are often found in bullion holdings, world coin collections, and inherited estates.
The silver Panda pictured here is marked “30g Ag .999” and “10元.” Those markings indicate 30 grams of .999 fine silver and a face value of 10 yuan. The face value is a denomination—not an appraisal of the coin’s silver or collector value.
One detail worth checking: 30 grams is slightly less than one troy ounce, which is approximately 31.1 grams. Don’t automatically assume every silver Panda is a one-ounce coin.
What Determines a Panda Coin’s Value?
When evaluating Chinese gold and silver Pandas, we consider:
- Date and issue: Some coins have stronger collector demand than others.
- Weight and purity: The actual gold or silver content matters.
- Condition: Scratches, cleaning, spots, and other damage can affect collector interest.
- Packaging and certification: Original packaging or PCGS and NGC holders can help identify what you have.
- Authenticity and current demand: A coin needs to be genuine, and its resale market matters.
An online asking price is not necessarily what a coin sells for—or what a dealer can pay. We look at the actual coins and explain the basis for our offer.
Please don’t clean your Pandas before bringing them in. Keep them in their capsules, sealed packaging, or grading holders, and bring any accompanying boxes or certificates.
Selling Panda Coins From an Inherited Collection
You don’t need to identify every coin before visiting. If your Pandas are mixed with other gold, silver, or world coins, bring the group together.
We also evaluate jewelry and estate items, so a collection containing coins, bullion, and jewelry can be reviewed during the same visit.
