The Hawaiian dollar, or “dala,” was introduced between 1847 and 1898 and circulated alongside U.S. currency. This period produced highly collectible coins and bills, starting with the copper cent featuring King Kamehameha III in 1847, followed by official silver coinage in 1883. These coins, with denominations like the umi keneta (dime), hapaha (quarter), hapalua (half-dollar), and akahi dala (dollar), were issued to align with U.S. coinage standards, adding to their collectible appeal.

Following Hawaii’s 1898 annexation to the United States, Hawaiian coins continued to circulate until they were demonetized in 1904. Many of these coins were subsequently melted, and surviving examples became prized collectibles. In addition to coins, Hawaiian banknotes are highly sought after. The Department of Finance first issued silver deposit certificates in 1879, with additional gold-backed certificates in 1897.

If you have Hawaiian coins or banknotes, Oaken Coins is interested in purchasing them. Contact us today to discuss your collection and contribute to preserving Hawaii’s unique numismatic heritage.

GOVERNMENT MINTED GOLD VS PRIVATE ISSUE GOLD.

Collectors have a diverse array of options when it comes to precious metals bars and rounds, offering advantages not found in coins. Bullion bars and rounds generally have lower premiums compared to government-issued coins, making them attractive for collectors primarily focused on weight. Art bars and rounds provide collectors with more choices, often featuring themed designs from unique places, historical periods, or niche interests, including motifs from historic coins. Private mints also offer more flexibility in terms of political and religious subjects, catering to collectors seeking pieces featuring their favorite politicians, religious figures, or expressing specific viewpoints.

PAMP Suisse, a renowned mint, offers customers exquisite minted ingots and cast bars in various metals and weights. Their Fortuna bars, struck from gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, depict the Roman goddess Fortuna alongside symbols associated with her. Some Fortuna ingots come in wallet-friendly packaging or multigram portfolios. PAMP also produces bars with religious themes like the Buddha, the Cross, a bar with a Hebrew inscription translating to “The Jewish nation lives,” and lunar year issues.

Historic coins serve as inspiration for many privately minted bars and rounds. Popular examples include rounds featuring designs from the Morgan and Indian Head Cent coins. While nothing compares to the originals, historic coins intended for circulation often have wear or imperfections, hindering collectors from fully appreciating their designs. Private rounds and bars provide collectors with the opportunity to enjoy these historic designs in pristine condition.

Privately minted bars and rounds also cater to political and religious interests. Some mints, such as Intaglio Mint and Golden State Mint, produce politically charged pieces, while religious designs are available from various sources, including the Holy Land Mint, the Ukrainian Archangel, and the Armenian Noah’s Ark.

Although government issues are predominantly coins, some mints also produce a limited number of bars. For instance, the Perth Mint offers a lunar series collection of silver bars, and the New Zealand Mint created a popular colorized Star Wars Poster Series for the island nation of Niue. Noteworthy recent releases include Tuvalu’s Silver Chinese Wedding Cranes Proof Bar and the Royal Canadian Mint’s Silver Maple Leaf Flex Multibar, which allows collectors to divide their silver in various ways, adding versatility to their collections.

OAKTON COINS & COLLECTIBLES IS BUYING UNITED STATES SILVER 3 CENT PIECES.

US Silver 3 cent pieces are a type of coin that was minted by the United States government between 1851 and 1873. These coins were made of 75% silver and 25% copper, and were created to address a shortage of small denomination coins in circulation at the time.

The history of the US Silver 3 cent piece begins in the mid-19th century, when the value of silver relative to gold began to decline. This led to a shortage of silver coins in circulation, particularly smaller denominations such as the 3 cent piece. In response, the US government authorized the creation of the Silver 3 cent piece in 1851, with the hope that it would help alleviate the shortage of small denomination coins.

The first US Silver 3 cent pieces were minted in 1851 and featured a design known as the “trime.” These coins were smaller and thinner than most other coins in circulation at the time, and featured a star design on the obverse side, with the denomination “3 CENTS” inscribed within the star. The reverse side featured a Roman numeral III with a wreath surrounding it.

In 1854, the design of the US Silver 3 cent piece was changed to feature a more familiar image of Lady Liberty on the obverse side. This new design featured Lady Liberty wearing a headband inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” and holding a pole with a cap on top. The reverse side of the coin featured a wreath encircling the Roman numeral III.

Over the years, the US Silver 3 cent piece underwent several design changes and modifications, including the addition of a “C” to indicate the coin was made of copper and silver, and a switch to a nickel alloy during the Civil War to conserve silver for more important uses.

The US Silver 3 cent piece was eventually discontinued in 1873 due to changes in the country’s coinage laws and the fact that other small denomination coins were becoming more prevalent in circulation. Today, these coins are considered to be rare and highly collectible, with their historical significance and unique designs making them prized possessions for coin collectors around the world.
